PLANNING A NEW BATHROOM

TOP TEN TIPS

1 SPACE

Many modern suites are compact but a corner bath is a good way of utilising space while ensuring a luxury look. Swapping your bath for a shower is becoming increasingly popular and new cross corner or pentagon shapes save space and look funky. If you want additional storage, a 'back-to-wall' suite and fitted furniture offers yet another solution while hiding ugly pipe-work.

2 PLUMBING

If you are looking to save both time and money, use existing plumbing wherever possible. It is a good idea to check out all your suite options before re-routing, as a smaller suite may be all that is needed to give the illusion of space. But don't be restricted by existing pipes and drains if the plans for your new bathroom require it. Water supply pipes are relatively easy to move as are water waste pipes. The soil pipe can be more restrictive, and thus more expensive to move, however using a 'macerator' gives you almost complete freedom to reposition the toilet.

3 VENTILATION

An extractor fan is a must both in respect of your own comfort and, if you don't have a window in your bathroom, as a legal requirement.

4 STORAGE

For a clutter-free approach, go for fitted furniture. A fully fitted look will create plenty of storage space but don't forget to include access panels for the plumbing. Other storage solutions include shelving, especially glass shelves, as they don't dominate the room.

5 LIGHTING

Water and electricity don't mix so ensure light fittings completely protect the bulb from splashes and dampness. Halogen lights set into the ceiling can be used to add very specific pools of bright light while dimmer switches and candleholders will help achieve a romantic atmosphere.

6 PAINTS, PAPERS AND TILES

Today's paint and wallpaper manufacturers have specially designed products suitable for damp, moist conditions. There are even anti-condensation paints that reduce condensation and contain fungicide to protect against unsightly mould. Ceramic tiles are an excellent option for bathroom walls and floors. There are so many shapes, colours and designs to choose from these days that you can let your imagination run wild giving a simple white bathroom hundreds of different looks.

7 FLOORING

Whatever you choose, make sure it's slip-resistant! Water and shiny surfaces simply don't mix. Many carpets are specifically designed for bathroom use or opt for binyl, linoleum and rubber, as they are waterproof and also warm underfoot. Natural stone such as limestone, slate and marble looks very luxurious and under-floor heating will ensure you won't perish even in the depths of winter.

8 PRIVACY

When it comes to showering and bathing you don't want the neighbours joining you! Traditionally, bathroom windows have been given a frosted or patterned finish but sandblasted glass pane will look sleek, modern and uncluttered. Alternatives to traditional blinds and curtains include wooden shutters or metallic venetian blinds for a contemporary look.

9 COLOUR

You can't go wrong with a white suite as it creates a clean fresh look and provides a neutral backdrop to add your personality to. Alternatively pergamon and cream shades add warmth and also provide a neutral setting. Add colour in the form of paint or wallpaper, towels and accessories to brighten the room and theme a style.

10 BRASSWARE

If you are happy with your basic suite but want to update the style of your bathroom, a change of brassware can give your room a fresh look. A bath/shower mixer instead of marked old single taps will add traditional style while a single sleek monobloc will give a contemporary modern finish. A mixage effect is also available with chrome and gold detailing so you can adapt the look to suit your tasts and your bathroom.
